Lotus Garden, 532 Grant (Chinatown), 397-0707 / 397-0130 Buddhist Chinese. Kosher. Superb restaurant. Good service. Try the mu-shu "pork". Lots of gluten, tofu, and yam dishes. The menu is awesome in length. This is a place where locals eat their workday lunches (3 courses) for $2.95 (1994). For a full dinner, it might run $8-$12 per person. Open Tue-Sun 11:30am-9pm. Discount for San Francisco Vegetarian Society members. The least interesting of Chinatown's three vegetarian restaurants. No brown rice. ------------------

Entrees run about $14.00 for shish kababs which are pure meat, no vegetables. Side orders (salad and fries) are an additional $4.00. Food is good, hot and fresh. Informal with classic canned Israeli music. I loved the food. A little pricey, but hey, it's kosher and it's San Francisco. Atmosphere is weak, but great Israeli music and a continuous parade of Israelis going in and out adds to authenticity. Of the kosher restaurants in San Francisco, this is the best. I must agree, ate at all the San Francisco kosher establishments while I was here and this one was the best! Wheelchair accessible; no stairs! The entrees do include either fries or rice and salad at no extra cost. Soups are excellent, chicken kebabs also very good. ------------ Under same ownership as Shirat Hayam which is almost next door. The remarks I updated on Shirat Hayam can apply here
