We remember

As we mature, we have to always remember the past, the good, the bad and the ugly, in order to appreciate the present, with those surrounding us, and face every situation with courage. Now we just passed an experience all together. We witnessed together the destruction of the twin towers and the death of our fellow citizens. It was sad, horrible, despicable, and revolting.

When I was a young boy in World War II, I passed similar experiences but with bombs, destruction, death, wounded people, the typhus epidemic, hunger, shortage of vital supplies like bread, salt, sugar, clothes, shoes, etc etc. The war had stopped almost every positive activity.
The grown-ups could not work in their trades or professions. They passed their time playing cards and conquering their fears. The only activity was the black market, which flourished under the eye of the authorities. Illegal as it was, it helped many people survive these hard times.
Today I feel that I was privileged to have remained alive.

Every experience we encounter represents a trial which has various effects on our lives and which we have to learn to overcome by recognizing our own feelings, which may pass unnoticed as we do not know their value and their meaning, and which are unveiled at various stages of our lives, to prepare us for our next trial.

We often take our lives for granted. We don't realize that every day that we are alive and we feel good is a grace. There are many people in the world who are suffering from sickness, many are handicapped, many are hungry. We look at them like at something remote. They are part of us and they deserve our attention and care. They share the same planet, the same air with us. Their existence is interconnected with ours, and our existence depends on their well-being.

My advice to my fellow Americans, is to enjoy life as much as we can without looking back to the suffering and to the past. To remember yes, but to go on with our lives, as we don't know what life is preparing for us. Like a mother who is expecting a child with pain and happiness. I hope that the last tragedy will strengthen us and that we will remember it as a bad dream.
