En 50 ans de travail historique, j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 frapp\u00e9 par le manque d\u2019attention \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard de l\u2019histoire des Juifs d\u2019Afrique du Nord et les dangers auxquels ils ont eu \u00e0 faire face sous les r\u00e9gimes du gouvernement fran\u00e7ais de Vichy et fasciste italien. L\u2019histoire de la pers\u00e9cution des Juifs en Afrique du Nord pendant la 2\u00e8me<\/sup> guerre mondiale fait partie int\u00e9grante de l\u2019histoire de la Shoah en France ; le destin des Juifs vivant en Afrique du Nord fran\u00e7aise \u00e9tait directement li\u00e9 au destin des Juifs vivant en France m\u00e9tropolitaine. Le r\u00e9gime collaborateur de la France de Vichy a \u00e9tendu ses lois antijuives \u2013 <\/b> promulgu\u00e9e<\/a>s en France (dans la M\u00e9tropole) – \u00e0 ses 3 colonies nord africaines. Des milliers de Juifs sont envoy\u00e9s dans des camps<\/b>de travail forc\u00e9 entre 1940 et 1943. Bien que les r\u00e9cits sur la Shoah en en France, au Maroc, en Alg\u00e9rie et en Tunisie<\/b> varient en fonction des conditions et circonstances diff\u00e9rentes dans chaque pays et en fonction des d\u00e9veloppements militaires de la 2\u00e8me<\/sup> guerre mondiale, leur histoire doit \u00eatre racont\u00e9e et rapport\u00e9e dans les mus\u00e9es, expositions, sites web, conf\u00e9rences et livres.<\/b><\/p>\n

Mes 2 livres, l\u2019ATLAS DE L\u2019HOLOCAUSTE et L\u2019HOLOCAUSTE : UNE TRAG\u00c9DIE JUIVE, relatent l\u2019histoire des Juifs d\u2019Afrique du Nord dans la Shoah. Dans mon ATLAS DE LA SHOAH, j\u2019affirme sans \u00e9quivoque que \u00ab ce n\u2019\u00e9tait pas seulement en Europe, mais aussi en Afrique du Nord que les Juifs \u00e9taient en danger \u00bb (page 137). \u00c0 la page 85, carte 99 \u00ab Juifs marqu\u00e9s du sceau de la mort, Janvier 20, 1942 \u00bb, je pr\u00e9cise: \u00ab France libre: 700 000 y compris les Juifs d\u2019Afrique du Nord Fran\u00e7aise. \u00bb. Dans mon livre L\u2019HOLOCAUSTE : UNE TRAG\u00c9DIE JUIVE, j\u2019explique que \u00ab\u2026700 000 est un chiffre qui inclut les Juifs S\u00e9pharades dans les possessions d\u2019Afrique du Nord fran\u00e7aises, Maroc, Alg\u00e9rie, Tunisie \u2026 (p. 282)\u2026 avec le d\u00e9barquement des forces<\/b> alli\u00e9es \u2026 les 117 000 Juifs d\u2019Alg\u00e9rie (et les 200 000 Juifs du Maroc) n\u2019\u00e9taient plus en danger d\u2019\u00eatre d\u00e9port\u00e9s en m\u00e9tropole\u2026 et au d\u00e9l\u00e0 (p. 482). Je raconte aussi comment \u00ab sous la domination allemande, les Juifs de Tunisie ont souffert pendant 5 mois de confiscation de leurs\u00a0 biens, de pillage, du travail forc\u00e9, de mauvais traitements et d\u2019execution sommaire\u2026Beaucoup moururent suite aux mauvais traitements, maladie, et aussi \u00e0 cause du bombardement a\u00e9rien des forces alli\u00e9es. Seule la d\u00e9faite de l\u2019Allemagne par les forces alli\u00e9es en mai 1943 a emp\u00each\u00e9 l\u2019extermination massive des Juifs de Tunisie.<\/b><\/p>\n

Dans mon prochain livre sous presse, LES JUIFS SOUS LE R\u00c9GIME DE L\u2019ISLAM, je relate le destin des Juifs d\u2019Afrique du Nord entre 1940 et 1943, y compris les Juifs de Libye. In my historical work over the past fifty years, I have been struck by the neglect of the story of the Jews of North Africa and the dangers facing them under Vichy French and Italian Fascist rule. The story of the persecution of the Jews in North Africa during the Second World War is an integral part of the history of the Holocaust in France; the fate of the Jews living in French North Africa was directly connected to the fate of the Jews living in Metropolitan France. The collaborationist Vichy France extended its anti-Jewish laws – passed in France – to its three North African colonies. Thousands of Jews
were sent to camps for slave labour between 1940 and 1943.<\/b><\/p>\n

Although the stories of the Holocaust in France, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco varied, depending on the specific conditions and circumstances in each country, and the military developments of the course of the Second World War, it is a story that needs to be told, and to be reflected in the museums, exhibitions, websites, lectures and books.<\/p>\n

In two of my own books, THE ATLAS OF THE HOLOCAUST and THE HOLOCAUST: A JEWISH TRAGEDY, I tell the story of the Jews of North Africa in the Holocaust. In my ATLAS OF THE HOLOCAUST I make it clear that \u201cIt was not only in Europe, but also in North Africa that Jews were at risk\u201d (page 137). On page 85, in map 99 \u201cJews Marked Out for Death, 20 January 1942,\u201d I specify \u201cFrance Unoccupied Zone: 700,000 including French North Africa.\u201d In my book THE HOLOCAUST; A JEWISH TRAGEDY, I explain that \u201c\u2026700,000, a figure which included the Sephardi Jews in France\u2019s North African possessions, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia\u2026 (page 282). \u2026with the Allied landings\u2026the 117,000 Jews of Algeria (and the 200,000 Jews of Morocco) were freed from the danger of deportation to Mmetropolitan France\u2026and beyond. (page 482). I also tell the story how \u00ab\u00a0the Jews of Tunisia suffered five months of confiscation of property, plunder, forced labor, ill-treatment and execution under German rule\u2026many had died from ill-treatment, disease, and even during Allied aerial bombing.\u00a0\u00bb Germany\u2019s defeat by the Allies in May 1943 averted the potential extension of mass murder to the Jews of Tunisia.<\/b><\/p>\n

In my forthcoming book JEWS UNDER MUSLIM RULE, I tell the story of the fate of Jews in North Africa between 1940 and 1943, including those of Libya. I strongly recommend that story of the Jews of North Africa in the Holocaust becomes an integral part of Jewish and Holocaust history.<\/b><\/p>\n

Roundup of Tunisian Jews remembered<\/h2>\n

(JTA) — Holocaust memorial institutions in France and Israel commemorated the roundup 67 years ago of Tunisian Jews.<\/b><\/p>\n

Ceremonies Wednesday at Yad Vashem and Sunday at the Memorial de la Shoah in Paris marked the Dec. 9, 1942 roundup of Tunisian Jews as part of an effort to raise awareness of Jewish suffering in Nazi-occupied North Africa during the Holocaust.<\/b><\/p>\n

Jews in Tunisia were forced to wear yellow stars and work in labor camps; some were deported to Auschwitz. Jews in other Vichy France colonies in Algeria and Morocco, as well as in Italian-occupied Libya, suffered similar fates.<\/b><\/p>\n

Martin Gilbert, the pre-eminent Holocaust historian, also marked the anniversary with a statement.<\/b><\/p>\n
