They soon withdrew, however; primarily, because they were loath to fight against their coreligionists of other parts of Mauritania, who remained faithful to the califate of Bagdad; and secondarily, because of some indignities committed by Idris against Jewesses. The victorious Idris avenged this defection by attacking the Jews in their cities. After an unsuccessful resistance peace was concluded, according to the terms of which the Jews were required to pay a capitation-tax and to provide a certain number of virgins annually for Idris&rsquo; harem. The Jewish tribe &lsquo;Ubaid Allah preferred to migrate to the East rather than to submit to Idris; according to a tradition, the Jews of the island of Gerba are the descendants of that tribe. In 793 Imam Idris was poisoned at the command of Harun al-Rashid (it is said, by the governor&rsquo;s physician Shamma, probably a Jew), and about 800 the Aghlabite dynasty was established. Under the rule of this dynasty, which lasted until 909, the situation of the Jews in Tunis was very favorable. As of old, Bizerta had a Jewish governor, and the political influence of the Jews made itself felt in the administration of the country. Especially prosperous at that time was the community of Kairwan, which was established soon after the foundation of that city by &lsquo;U&amp;#7731;ba ibn Nafi&rsquo;, in the year 670. <\/p>\n<p>A period of reaction set in with the accession of the Zirite Al-Mu&rsquo;izz (1016-62), who persecuted all heterodox sects, as well as the Jews. The persecution was especially detrimental to the prosperity of the Kairwan community, and members thereof began to emigrate to the city of Tunis, which speedily gained in population and in commercial importance. <\/p>\n<p>The accession of the Almohade dynasty to the throne of the Maghreb provinces in 1146 proved very disastrous to the Jews of Tunis. In pursuance of a fanciful belief, of which there is no trace in Moslem tradition, the first Almohade, &lsquo;Abd al-Mu&rsquo;min, claimed that Mohammed had permitted the Jews free exercise of their religion for only five hundred years, and had declared that if, after that period, the Messiah had not come, they were to be forced to embrace Islam. Accordingly Jews as well as Christians were compelled either to embrace Islam or to leave the country. &lsquo;Abd al-Mu&rsquo;min&rsquo;s successors pursued the same course, and their severe measures resulted either in emigration or in forcible conversions. Je vous en livre quelques extraits.  <\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Les repr\u00e9sentants de l&rsquo;Union europ\u00e9enne, Javier Solana, Miguel Moratinos et Alistair Crook sont actuellement en contact avec le Fatah, le Hamas et les brigades d&rsquo;El Aksa afin de les persuader de d\u00e9clarer un cessez le feu des attentats \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur du territoire isra\u00e9lien. En \u00e9change, l&rsquo;union europ\u00e9enne consid\u00e9rerait comme \u00ab l\u00e9gitime \u00bb la poursuite de la lutte arm\u00e9e dans les territoires occup\u00e9s \u00bb.  <\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Une telle d\u00e9claration de cessez-le feu, poursuit le rapport, permettrait aux palestiniens de retrouver un plus grand soutien international, de relancer le processus de paix et &#8211; je cite toujours &#8211; de relancer la balle dans le camp isra\u00e9lien \u00bb.  <\/p>\n<p>Ainsi donc, l&rsquo;Union europ\u00e9enne ne propose ni plus ni moins qu&rsquo;un syst\u00e8me de s\u00e9lection permettant de d\u00e9signer les Isra\u00e9liens qui ont le droit de vivre, et ceux que l&rsquo;on a le droit de tuer. L&rsquo;Union europ\u00e9enne offre son soutient aux palestiniens. En \u00e9change, elle leur propose un march\u00e9. Arr\u00eatez de tuer les passagers des autobus de Tel-Aviv ou d&rsquo;Afula. Et nous vous laisserons canarder les civils de Jud\u00e9e-Samarie. Au-del\u00e0 des fronti\u00e8res de 67, tout est permis. Vous pourrez tirer sur les colons. Les hommes, les femmes et m\u00eame ceux qu&rsquo;une d\u00e9p\u00eache de l&rsquo;AFP n&rsquo;avait pas h\u00e9sit\u00e9 en son temps \u00e0 qualifier de \u00ab b\u00e9b\u00e9 colon \u00bb.  <\/p>\n<p>Au-del\u00e0 de l&rsquo;horreur d&rsquo;une telle proposition on est frapp\u00e9 de la parfaite bonne conscience avec laquelle l&rsquo;UE a os\u00e9 proposer ce subtil distinguo entre le bon et le mauvais terrorisme. Il s&rsquo;agit, selon les propres termes du document que des officiels isra\u00e9liens ont pu examiner, de \u00abrelancer les efforts de paix \u00bb dans la r\u00e9gion.  <\/p>\n<p>Apr\u00e8s deux ans d&rsquo;Intifada, l&rsquo;Union europ\u00e9enne n&rsquo;a d\u00e9cid\u00e9ment rien compris.
