Je suis n\u00e9e comme Musulmane au Caire (Egypte) et j’y ai v\u00e9cu, ainsi que dans la bande de Gaza. Dans les ann\u00e9es 50, mon p\u00e8re a \u00e9t\u00e9 envoy\u00e9 par le pr\u00e9sident \u00e9gyptien Gamal A’bdel Nasser pour diriger le Renseignement militaire \u00e0 Gaza et au Sina\u00ef. Il y a cr\u00e9\u00e9 le groupe des \u00ab\u00a0F\u00e9dayine palestiniens\u00a0\u00bb qui \u00e9tait la r\u00e9sistance arm\u00e9e de l’\u00e9poque. Ces \u00ab\u00a0f\u00e9dayine\u00a0\u00bb traversaient la fronti\u00e8re et ils ont massacr\u00e9 en Isra\u00ebl 400 personnes, en blessant 900 autres. <\/p>\n

Comme r\u00e9sultat des op\u00e9rations de ces \u00ab\u00a0f\u00e9dayine\u00a0\u00bb, mon p\u00e8re a \u00e9t\u00e9 tu\u00e9 quand j’avais 8 ans. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 salu\u00e9 par Nasser comme un h\u00e9ros national, consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme un \u00ab\u00a0shahid\u00a0\u00bb ou martyr (t\u00e9moin). Dans son discours annon\u00e7ant la nationalisation du Canal de Suez, Nasser a fait le v\u0153u que toute l’Egypte vengerait la mort de mon p\u00e8re. Nasser me demanda ainsi qu’\u00e0 mes parents \u00ab\u00a0Lequel d’entre vous vengera la mort de votre p\u00e8re, en tuant des Juifs?\u00a0\u00bb Nous nous sommes regard\u00e9s sans voix, incapables de r\u00e9pondre.
\u00c0 l’\u00e9cole \u00e0 Gaza, on m’a enseign\u00e9 la haine, la vengeance et la r\u00e9torsion. La paix n’a jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 une option, en fait elle \u00e9tait per\u00e7ue comme un signe de d\u00e9faite et de faiblesse. \u00c0 l’\u00e9cole on chantait des chants avec des mots traitant les Juifs de chiens (c’est \u00e0 dire impurs, dans la culture arabe). <\/p>\n

Critique et questionnement \u00e9taient interdits. Et quand je les pratiquais, on me disait \u00ab\u00a0les Musulmans ne peuvent pas aimer les ennemis de Allah, et ceux qui le font n’auront aucune mis\u00e9ricorde en enfer\u00a0\u00bb. Jeune femme, j’ai visit\u00e9 une amie chr\u00e9tienne au Caire lors des pri\u00e8res du vendredi, quand toutes les deux nous entend\u00eemes les attaques verbales contre les Juifs et les Chr\u00e9tiens se r\u00e9pandant des haut-parleurs de la mosqu\u00e9e. On entendait \u00ab\u00a0qu’Allah d\u00e9truise les infid\u00e8les et les Juifs, les ennemis de Allah. Nous ne les fr\u00e9quenterons pas et nous ne signerons aucun trait\u00e9 avec eux\u00a0\u00bb et la foule des fid\u00e8les r\u00e9pondait Amen! Mon amie avait peur et moi j’avais honte. Et c’est l\u00e0 o\u00f9 j’ai compris que l’enseignement et la pratique de ma religion \u00e9taient erron\u00e9s. Malheureusement je ne suis pas la seule \u00e0 avoir subi cette forme d’\u00e9ducation religieuse. Des centaines de millions de Musulmans ont \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9lev\u00e9s dans cette haine de l’Occident et des Juifs, comme moyen de d\u00e9tourner leurs sentiments \u00e0 l’\u00e9gard de leurs chefs. Et les choses n’ont pas chang\u00e9 depuis les ann\u00e9es 50 quand j’\u00e9tais une gamine! <\/p>\n

La t\u00e9l\u00e9vision Palestinienne pr\u00f4ne le terrorisme et les livres scolaires nient l’existence de l’\u00e9tat d’Isra\u00ebl.. plus de 300 \u00e9coles ont pour nom un martyr, dont mon p\u00e8re. Des rues en Egypte et \u00e0 Gaza portent le nom de mon p\u00e8re comme celui d’autres \u00ab\u00a0martyrs\u00a0\u00bb. Quel type de message ceci envoie-t-il aux terroristes? Qu’ils ont des h\u00e9ros! Les chefs qui ont sign\u00e9 des trait\u00e9s de paix, comme le pr\u00e9sident Anwar al Sadat, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 assassin\u00e9s. Et aujourd’hui le pr\u00e9sident iranien, un islamo-fasciste propose des r\u00eaves nucl\u00e9aires, nie l’Holocauste et menace d’effacer Isra\u00ebl de la carte, comme moyen de contr\u00f4ler son pays divis\u00e9. <\/p>\n

En effet, comme le Danemark doit pr\u00e9sider le Conseil de S\u00e9curit\u00e9 de l’Onu, les flammes de la controverse ont \u00e9t\u00e9 attis\u00e9es par l’Iran et la Syrie (pour intimider ce pays). Nous sommes \u00e0 un moment critique, car l’IAEA doit d\u00e9f\u00e9rer l’Iran devant le Conseil de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 et demander des sanctions. En m\u00eame temps la Syrie est sous examen pour ses actions au Liban. L’Iran et la Syrie cherchent cyniquement \u00e0 embarrasser le Danemark afin de parvenir \u00e0 leurs fins dangereuses. <\/p>\n

Mais les \u00e9meutes et les manifestations sont le fait de foules m\u00fbres de rage. Depuis mon enfance \u00e0 Gaza jusqu’aujourd’hui, j’ai toujours vu qu’accuser l’Occident et Isra\u00ebl \u00e9tait un v\u00e9ritable business dans le monde musulman. \u00c0 chaque fois que la paix \u00e9tait \u00e0 port\u00e9e de main, le chefs Palestiniens ont toujours trouv\u00e9 un groupuscule qui r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 la saper. <\/p>\n

Ils ont accept\u00e9 que leur peuple soit la chair \u00e0 canon du \u00ab\u00a0jihad arabe\u00a0\u00bb. Les dictateurs des pays avoisinant sont tous heureux de trouver une population qui serve de diversion aux probl\u00e8mes qu’il rencontrent chez eux. La seule voix libre de s’exprimer dans ces pays en dehors du gouvernement, c’est celle de la mosqu\u00e9e et dans ce lieu de pri\u00e8re, on appelle au jihad. <\/p>\n

Est-ce si surprenant qu’apr\u00e8s des d\u00e9cennies d’endoctrinement \u00e0 une culture de haine, le peuple exprime sa haine r\u00e9ellement? Le soci\u00e9t\u00e9 arabe s’est cr\u00e9\u00e9e un syst\u00e8me qui repose sur la peur d’un ennemi commun, syst\u00e8me qui apporte l’unit\u00e9 dont on a besoin cruellement, la coh\u00e9sion et la conformit\u00e9 dans une r\u00e9gion ravag\u00e9e par les luttes tribales, l’instabilit\u00e9, la violence et la corruption \u00e9go\u00efste. Ainsi on accuse Juifs et Chr\u00e9tiens de tous les maux (m\u00eame de la grippe aviaire) plut\u00f4t de se pr\u00e9occuper de construire de bonnes \u00e9coles, des routes, des h\u00f4pitaux, des logements et de fournir des emplois et de l’espoir au peuple. <\/p>\n

J’ai v\u00e9cu 30 ans dans cette zone de guerre, d’oppression et de dictature, d’\u00e9tat policier. Les citoyens se pr\u00e9cipitaient pour apaiser et glorifier leur dictateur, tout en d\u00e9tournant le regard lorsque des Musulmans torturaient et terrorisaient d’autres Musulmans. J’ai \u00e9t\u00e9 le t\u00e9moin de meurtres de filles pour l’honneur, de l’oppression de femmes, de mutilations g\u00e9nitales, de la polygamie et de ses effets d\u00e9vastateurs dans les relations familiales. Tout cela est en train de d\u00e9truire la foi musulmane de l’int\u00e9rieur. <\/p>\n

Il est grand temps que les Arabes et les Musulmans se mettent debout pour sauver leur famille. Il faut que nos chefs cessent d’utiliser l’Occident et Isra\u00ebl comme une diversion et une excuse \u00e0 leur propre faillite et au manque de libert\u00e9 de leurs citoyens. Il est temps d’arr\u00eater cette mascarade \u00e0 propos des caricatures, alors qu’on se tait quand des Musulmans, le Coran \u00e0 une main, tue des innocents avec l’autre main. <\/p>\n

Les Musulmans ont besoin d’emplois et pas de jihad. Les excuses demand\u00e9es \u00e0 propos des caricatures ne r\u00e9soudront pas ce probl\u00e8me. Nous voulons l’espoir, pas la haine! <\/p>\n

\u00c0 moins de reconna\u00eetre que la culture de la haine est la raison profonde de ces manifestations autour des caricatures, ces r\u00e9actions violentes ne seront alors que le pr\u00e9lude d’une confrontation plus large entre des civilisations, que le monde ne pourra pas supporter. <\/p>\n

The controversy regarding the Danish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed completely misses the point. Of course, the cartoons are offensive to Muslims, but newspaper cartoons do not warrant the burning of buildings and the killing of innocent people. The cartoons did not cause the disease of hate that we are seeing in the Muslim world on our television screens at night – they are only a symptom of a far greater disease. <\/p>\n

I was born and raised as a Muslim in Cairo, Egypt and in the Gaza Strip. In the 1950s, my father was sent by Egypt’s President, Gamal Abdel Nasser, to head the Egyptian military intelligence in Gaza and the Sinai where he founded the Palestinian Fedayeen, or \u00ab\u00a0armed resistance\u00a0\u00bb. They made cross-border attacks into Israel, killing 400 Israelis and wounding more than 900 others. <\/p>\n

My father was killed as a result of the Fedayeen operations when I was eight years old. He was hailed by Nasser as a national hero and was considered a shaheed, or martyr. In his speech announcing the nationalisation of the Suez Canal, Nasser vowed that all of Egypt would take revenge for my father’s death. My siblings and I were asked by Nasser: \u00ab\u00a0Which one of you will avenge your father’s death by killing Jews?\u00a0\u00bb We looked at each other speechless, unable to answer. <\/p>\n

In school in Gaza, I learned hate, vengeance and retaliation. Peace was never an option, as it was considered a sign of defeat and weakness. At school we sang songs with verses calling Jews \u00ab\u00a0dogs\u00a0\u00bb (in Arab culture, dogs are considered unclean). <\/p>\n

Criticism and questioning were forbidden. When I did either of these, I was told: \u00ab\u00a0Muslims cannot love the enemies of God, and those who do will get no mercy in hell.\u00a0\u00bb As a young woman, I visited a Christian friend in Cairo during Friday prayers, and we both heard the verbal attacks on Christians and Jews from the loudspeakers outside the mosque. They said: \u00ab\u00a0May God destroy the infidels and the Jews, the enemies of God. We are not to befriend them or make treaties with them.\u00a0\u00bb We heard worshippers respond \u00ab\u00a0Amen\u00a0\u00bb. <\/p>\n

My friend looked scared; I was ashamed. That was when I first realised that something was very wrong in the way my religion was taught and practised. Sadly, the way I was raised was not unique. Hundreds of millions of other Muslims also have been raised with the same hatred of the West and Israel as a way to distract from the failings of their leaders. Things have not changed since I was a little girl in the 1950s. <\/p>\n

Palestinian television extols terrorists, and textbooks still deny the existence of Israel. More than 300 Palestinians schools are named after shaheeds, including my father. Roads in both Egypt and Gaza still bear his name – as they do of other \u00ab\u00a0martyrs\u00a0\u00bb. What sort of message does that send about the role of terrorists? That they are heroes. Leaders who signed peace treaties, such as President Anwar Sadat, have been assassinated. Today, the Islamo-fascist president of Iran uses nuclear dreams, Holocaust denials and threats to \u00ab\u00a0wipe Israel off the map\u00a0\u00bb as a way to maintain control of his divided country. <\/p>\n

Indeed, with Denmark set to assume the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, the flames of the cartoon controversy have been fanned by Iran and Syria. This is critical since the International Atomic Energy Agency is expected to refer Iran to the Security Council and demand sanctions. At the same time, Syria is under scrutiny for its actions in Lebanon. Both Iran and Syria cynically want to embarrass the Danes to achieve their dangerous goals. <\/p>\n

But the rallies and riots come from a public ripe with rage. From my childhood in Gaza until today, blaming Israel and the West has been an industry in the Muslim world. Whenever peace seemed attainable, Palestinian leaders found groups who would do everything to sabotage it. They allowed their people to be used as the front line of Arab jihad. Dictators in countries surrounding the Palestinians were only too happy to exploit the Palestinians as a diversion from problems in their own backyards. The only voice outside of government control in these areas has been the mosques, and these places of worship have been filled with talk of jihad. <\/p>\n

Is it any surprise that after decades of indoctrination in a culture of hate, that people actually do hate? Arab society has created a system of relying on fear of a common enemy. It’s a system that has brought them much-needed unity, cohesion and compliance in a region ravaged by tribal feuds, instability, violence, and selfish corruption. So Arab leaders blame Jews and Christians rather than provide good schools, roads, hospitals, housing, jobs, or hope to their people. <\/p>\n

For 30 years I lived inside this war zone of oppressive dictatorships and police states. Citizens competed to appease and glorify their dictators, but they looked the other way when Muslims tortured and terrorised other Muslims. I witnessed honour killings of girls, oppression of women, female genital mutilation, polygamy and its devastating effect on family relations. All of this is destroying the Muslim faith from within. <\/p>\n

It’s time for Arabs and Muslims to stand up for their families. We must stop allowing our leaders to use the West and Israel as an excuse to distract from their own failed leadership and their citizens’ lack of freedoms. It’s time to stop allowing Arab leaders to complain about cartoons while turning a blind eye to people who defame Islam by holding Korans in one hand while murdering innocent people with the other. <\/p>\n

Muslims need jobs – not jihad. Apologies about cartoons will not solve the problems. What is needed is hope and not hate. Unless we recognise that the culture of hate is the true root of the riots surrounding this cartoon controversy, this violent overreaction will only be the start of a clash of civilis-ations that the world cannot bear. <\/p>\n
