Il \u00e9tait fier d\u2019\u00eatre Juif et ne le cachait pas. C\u2019est \u00e0 Paris qu\u2019il a \u00e9t\u00e9 pour la premi\u00e8re fois victime de pr\u00e9jug\u00e9s antis\u00e9mites. Quand il est arriv\u00e9 en France en 1906, l&rsquo;antis\u00e9mitisme \u00e9tait dans l&rsquo;air. Cette ann\u00e9e-l\u00e0, la Cour de cassation de Paris innocentait et r\u00e9habilitait d\u00e9finitivement le capitaine Dreyfus.<br \/>\nMarc Chagall, raconta \u00e0 propos de son s\u00e9jour \u00e0 Paris en 1910: \u00ab \u00c0 chaque pas, je me sentais juif. Les gens me le faisaient sentir. \u00bb Contrairement \u00e0 Chagall, Modigliani, \u00e2g\u00e9 de 22 ans, aurait facilement pu se faire passer pour Fran\u00e7ais. Elev\u00e9 en Italie par la famille fran\u00e7aise de sa m\u00e8re, il a grandi immerg\u00e9 dans la culture fran\u00e7aise. Il parlait couramment la langue sans accent.<br \/>\nSon ami proche et protecteur, Paul Alexandre, qui a rassembl\u00e9 de nombreux dessins et peintures de l\u2019artiste a \u00e9crit : \u00ab Face \u00e0 ceux ayant la haine antijuive il proclamait sa jud\u00e9it\u00e9 avec arrogance \u00bb.<br \/>\nLe juda\u00efsme \u00e9tait au centre de l\u2019\u00e9ducation et du patrimoine culturel de Modigliani. Son grand-p\u00e8re maternel d\u00e9clarait \u00eatre un descendant de Barouch Spinoza dont la philosophie fut \u00e0 la base des valeurs et des croyances de l\u2019artiste.<br \/>\nDans sa biographie, sa fille Jeanne, d\u00e9crit la \u00ab force d\u00e9vastatrice \u00bb avec laquelle l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re parisienne a agi sur son p\u00e8re. Le tout premier tableau que Modigliani a expos\u00e9 \u00e0 Paris s\u2019appelle \u00ab La Juive \u00bb. Titre qui soulignait l\u2019appartenance ethnique du mod\u00e8le, pour faire \u00e9cho aux origines de l\u2019artiste. Modigliani avait mis un accent particulier sur la forme de son nez, afin de tourner en d\u00e9rision les caricatures des magazines antis\u00e9mites.<br \/>\nDans l\u2019un de ses rares autoportraits, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 en 1910, il se pr\u00e9sente avec la barbe \u00e9paisse et la tunique associ\u00e9es aux juifs orthodoxes. La mani\u00e8re abstraite avec laquelle il d\u00e9peint ses propres traits, yeux en amande \u00e0 fortes paupi\u00e8res, sourcils \u00e9pais et nez triangulaire pro\u00e9minent, tendait \u00e0 illustrer un homme assumant son alt\u00e9rit\u00e9 culturelle.<br \/>\nModigliani a \u00e9t\u00e9 profond\u00e9ment affect\u00e9 par son environnement social et politique. Confront\u00e9 \u00e0 un niveau de haine qu&rsquo;il n&rsquo;avait jamais connu en Italie, l&rsquo;artiste proclamait farouchement son identit\u00e9 et prot\u00e9geait son individualisme. Il a attir\u00e9 de nombreux individus et groupes marginalis\u00e9s dans la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 fran\u00e7aise. Alors qu&rsquo;il \u00e9tait encore adolescent il avait \u00e9crit :<br \/>\n\u00ab Exprimez-vous et avancez.
