Le r\u00f4le principal est tenu par un acteur adolescent, Banks Repeta.<\/p>\n<p>Trois ans apr\u00e8s \u00eatre mont\u00e9 dans les \u00e9toiles pour son son huis clos spatial \u00ab&nbsp;Ad Astra&nbsp;\u00bb, l\u2019auteur de \u00ab&nbsp;Little Odessa&nbsp;\u00bb, son premier film, redescend dans son New York natal. Gray, dont c\u2019est la cinqui\u00e8me fois en comp\u00e9tition \u00e0 Cannes, ne retrouve ni la noirceur de \u00ab&nbsp;La nuit nous appartient&nbsp;\u00bb (2007), ni l\u2019ambition de \u00ab&nbsp;The Immigrant&nbsp;\u00bb (2013), avec Marion Cotillard.<\/p>\n<p>A 53 ans, Gray livre son film le plus autobiographique: il raconte la vocation naissante d\u2019un jeune gar\u00e7on, Paul, r\u00eavant de devenir artiste, dans une famille d\u2019origine juive du quartier de Flushing, o\u00f9 lui-m\u00eame a grandi.<\/p>\n<p>Le tout dans une ambiance 100 % \u00ab&nbsp;ann\u00e9es 1980&nbsp;\u00bb, avec bande-son de l\u2019\u00e9poque, des Clash (\u00ab&nbsp;Armageddon Time&nbsp;\u00bb, d\u2019o\u00f9 d\u00e9rive le titre du film) au hip-hop du Sugarhill Gang.<\/p>\n<p>Inscrit dans une \u00e9cole publique avec des \u00e9l\u00e8ves de toute origine, contrairement \u00e0 son a\u00een\u00e9 Ted, scolaris\u00e9 dans un prestigieux \u00e9tablissement, Paul fait les 400 coups et se lie d\u2019amiti\u00e9 avec le pitre de la classe, Johnny (Jaylin Webb), un gamin noir sans famille.<\/p>\n<p>James Gray diss\u00e8que les lignes de fractures dans cette famille juive new-yorkaise issue de la diaspora ukrainienne : la jalousie entre fr\u00e8res, le complexe d\u2019inf\u00e9riorit\u00e9 du p\u00e8re, modeste chauffagiste, la communication impossible entre une m\u00e8re et son fils. Et surtout la relation unique entre le grand-p\u00e8re, interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par Anthony Hopkins, et son petit-fils, et dont l\u2019ultime legs sera de l\u2019aider \u00e0 accomplir sa vocation: le dessin.<\/p>\n<p>Autant d\u2019\u00e9chos au parcours du r\u00e9alisateur, qui lui aussi a fr\u00e9quent\u00e9 une \u00e9cole publique du Queens avant d\u2019aller dans le priv\u00e9, a grandi dans une famille modeste d\u2019immigr\u00e9s juifs. Le film a \u00e9t\u00e9 en partie tourn\u00e9 dans son quartier natal.<\/p>\n<p>Le contexte historique, l\u2019\u00e9lection du conservateur Ronald Reagan, vue avec horreur dans cette famille progressiste, la menace nucl\u00e9aire ou encore la mont\u00e9e en puissance de la famille Trump sont \u00e9voqu\u00e9s\u2026 sans que le film sache totalement quoi en
